Lisa Samphire
Glass Basketry

This piece is one example from a series of work titled "Glass Basketry". Inspiration for the artist's pieces comes from various textile designs and the old art form of weaving cane baskets. The artist pulls "glass cane" with pattern throughout, then cuts it to make murrines. These murrines are laid out on a metal sheet creating the pattern, which is then "rolled up" on a pipe to make the vessel. Samphire enjoys the challenge of the complex process and resolving the interrelated balance of aesthetic and technical problems in making these pieces.
