Abyssinian Cat on Rag Rug Forbidden to the Cat This piece took the artist approximately six weeks to make. Mathias finds cats, especially Abyssinian and other skinny breeds fascinating. As she was sculpting the cat base from photos, Mathias began thinking about the meaning of "abyss" and decided to cover the cat in black for the associative meaning of the work. Therefore the cat came out not as an auburn shorthair, but as a scrappy, threatening, black feline. The artist decided to put the thing on a homey, comforting rug because she knows that some people hate cats, including her sculptures, and she thinks Abyssinians have enough against them with their names. She wanted to make up for that. Hand built and fired paperclay cat glued onto plywood base with handcut sheet glass and glass tiles (Venetian and Interstyle) siliconed onto cat and base. Final grouting, regrouting, cleaning and polishing. 15 x 20 x 12" - 2004 |
