Artist Statement:
The image of the reflective
child encourages consideration of the wisdom and inner knowledge
of children; a knowledge that, by its constrained cognitive and
language qualities, is forever inaccessible to adults. The excerpt
from the poem by Laurence Binyon (1869-943) captures this sense
of "secrecies" and the "infinities" of possibilities
ahead. The butterfly images evoke a sense of emergence and the
unfolding and fluttering of private, inner knowing as it interfaces
with societal understandings. Those familiar with the Binyon
poem will also recognize the imagery as representative of a mother's
hopes and fears.
Glass is particularly appropriate as a material for this piece.
The gentle reflectance of the opalescent background evokes the
shimmer and depth of evolving understanding. The reflectance
of the iridized transparent insets enhances the sense of fluttering
butterfly wings. The dichroic spheres guide the eye and visually
represent jewels of developing knowledge as well as encouraging
contemplation of infinities. |
